Heavy Snow For Southern Illinois

CBS Chicago

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) – Southern Illinois could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow as a winter storm moves across the lower section of the state.

Southern Illinois University canceled classes and closed offices Monday due to the storm.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Monday.

Snow and sleet are expected along and south of a line from Beardstown to Springfield to Paris.

Forecasters say snow could fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour before tapering this afternoon and evening.

The weather service says motorists should be careful of slick and hazardous roads and only travel if absolutely necessary.

Visibility could be as little as a quarter to a half of a mile in the heaviest snow.
